The School
Tackling the contrasting and incompatible desires to fit in with and stand out from the crowd. There are periods in life where the need to fit in is strong and one of those times is through your school years. I produced this series of images working with a group of young adults attending secondary school, with the objective of exploring their desire to fit in and be part of a crowd, whilst also trying to form their own identity. My images capture that moment of awkwardness when an individual is aware of being the outsider.
On first glance as viewers we are aware of who is the odd one out, but on closer inspection there are other signs and small details that tell another story. Forced to wear a uniform that signposts which clan they belong to, these pupils find subtle ways to stamp their own identity on their material ensemble.
